Chengmai county, Hainan province Awarded the Int'l Longevity Award

On November 22, 2012, Chengmai, Hainan, China was recognized by the Northeast Asia Economic Forum Population Aging and Longevity Experts Committee in the People’s Congress of Beijing. Dr. Lee-Jay Cho, Chairman of the Northeast Asian Economic Forum and the International Experts committee on Aging and Longevity chairman presented the certificate, which was awarded jointly by Professor Joseph Troisi, Director of the International Institute for Aging, United Nations.
Recent survey results indicate that the centenarians in Chengmai county are in good health and mobility. The majority of the centenarians are satisfied with their daily living conditions and routines. More than half are also in a healthy mental and spiritual awareness. Survey results indicate that 61.8% of centenarians would term their life as being “good” or “average” while 28% feel the status of their health is “not very good”.
In Chengmai county, the majority of centenarians are able to live independently and perform daily activities on their own such as household chores including laundry and firewood. Some of the centenarians maintain a strong sense of hearing, movement and other senses.
According to the sixth national census, the average life expectancy in Chengmai county is 77.79 years, which is 6.59 years older than the national average. Currently there are 18,541 people who are 80 years or older and make up 3.3% of the population. There are 215 centenarians within the population of Chengmai. These statistics reached the United Nations criteria requirement for a longevity area.
